FIND YOUR
GROUND

Mechanical Logging is a good choice for private landowners.

* It's cleaner
* Saves regeneration (small trees)
* Improves site development for seed bed
* Reduces fuels to supress fire danger

Choosing a Logger?

Not all logging contractors are the same. When I say this, I mean every aspect of what a logger or logging company will do, won't do, and can do will affect the outcome of your managed timberland.

Hiring a logger is a hard choice, there are alot of great loggers out there. When a landowner looks into hiring a logger, there are alot of things to consider.

Mechanical - all tree harvesting, processing and handling is done with a machine. This being said, maybe a little more temporary impact to the ground, but in turn less impact on the regeneration (small trees/seedlings). Also, utilization of forest products is increased.

Conventional - all timber felling/bucking is done by hand with a chainsaw.

Your choice might be which logger has better clean up? or can the logger remove stumps? or maybe build house sites, driveways and roads? Whatever it may be, the landowner needs to be upfront with what they need done. It will vary on what a logger can do depending on what equipment that company has. Remember that the more things the land owner wants done to their property, the more the logging cost goes up.

Logging Contractors this day and age should also be well versed in best logging practices, insured, and should have knowledge of Forestry including insect/disease and fire hazard management to say the least. Also, it is very important to have a viable contract between logger and land owner. Most of the time things are verbal or with a handshake, not saying that's bad, if everyone does what they say they are going to do. But a written one is best so all parties can refer to it when a potential problem arises.

It is a huge leap of faith that a landowner has to make when hiring a logger. When you chose the right logger for the job it usually ends up awesome. When you are seeking to manage your forest, remember a few things...

1. The logging process can be very dynamic and change from area to area and tree to tree.

2. You will find ground you never knew you had.

3. (I think most important) Education plus logging equals a healthy working forest.  (and making a little bit of money is good too!).

So choose wisely and enjoy.
